The impenetrable blackness
Cold as the cosmic void
The sunken city lies dead
Trapped for aeons unending
In ancient depths, unknown, unseen
In this cenotaph drenched in horror

Afflicted through torture and terror
This aching will never go away
Only fear is present here

There is no escape from this living nightmare

The cover painting (Udslidt by H A Brendekilde, if anyone is interested) and the music is in perfect alignment. So much sorrow, so much despair... Right from the start I can feel my soul wither away with each riff. Still, towards the end of the record I can catch little glimpses of hope in the melodies. A beautiful journey in the bleak reality of existence.

Late 90's BM worship, but it's also a lil more than that. This album takes the best elements from the scene it's inspired by and mostly avoids the worst of it; the song-writing is well-written, it's performed with passion and fun, and the production is raw but isn't lo-fi. (i.e. it doesn't obfuscate and/or suckass). Tl;dr It's safe but high quality BM. Recommended.

I was drawn to the cover as this painting of the death of Chatterton has since long been one of my favourites. It turns out that the music paints a similar picture of deep agony overlaid with a blanket of dreariness.I already missed this poet I never knew, and now I miss him even more.
